Return of Hoops – 2011 Season Preview

The time is upon us; that special time of the year at the apex of American sports. The MLB World Series is about to begin, we’re close to the half way point of the NFL season, but above all, for a basketball junkie like myself, the NBA season is about to begin. We are about to witness one of the most exciting season in recent history. Fans and casual observers of the sport were captivated by the tumultuous off season that featured a plethora of franchise players searching for new homes.

At the top of the mountain of marquee names sat Lebron James, the media acclaimed King and back to back MVP. His every move was covered meticulously by hoards of media anxious to see where James would land. Rumblings of his departure from Cleveland to the sunny beaches of Miami to join fellow superstars Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade were getting louder and louder before Lebron let the world know of his “Decision.” So here we are, ready to witness the long awaited season debut of a trio unlike any other in NBA history.

NBA commissioner David Stern decided to give the fans a treat by pitting Miami against their East Coast rivals the Boston Celtics. After coming off an excruciating loss at the hands of the great and mighty (my emphasis) Los Angeles Lakers, Boston revamped their squad to become arguably the deepest team in the league. In the off season they added Shaq, Jermaine O’neal, and Delonte West. Don’t let the ages of these NBA veterans fool you, they won’t be asked to play 40 minutes a game; they will be effective in spurts as a unit. Their big man rotation is phenomenal and that happens to be Miami’s biggest deficiency. Pat riley managed to put a pretty solid supporting cast around Miami’s big three, but none of their bigs are all that effective. Boston’s depth and experience will ultimately win out against Miami’s athleticism and star power.

Most likely we are going to have to throw out all conventional wisdom when attempting to predict how the Heat’s season will turn out, but I think that Miami will have a longer adjustment period than people think. Of course I am excited to see my Lakers get their championship rings and go up against Yao and the Rockets tonight, but the intrigue of this Miami experiment is much too enthralling too avoid.
